Brenden 'Margo' Margieson is without doubt one of Australia's most exciting surfers ever. There are few competitively unranked surfers in the world who command the level of respect and admiration that he is afforded by the international surfing fraternity. Voted best free surfer in the world in 1998 and again this year by the top 44 surfers in the world, his surfing is held in awe in the league of the superstars.

In 2004 Margo visited Wales to check out just what was on offer.

"Wales has so much potential. I surfed Freshwater West. It's a fun beach break, but the best surf was at a secret spot in the western corner which I¹d really like to go back and surf again," says Margo.

"The surf's quite different to Australia because the tides are so big. One minute you're surfing a fun bank on the inside which is sucky then it can just get really fat. It certainly keeps it interesting," he says.

Having surfed such exotic locations as Indonesia, Chile, South Africa, Tahiti and Hawaii, Margo¹s first visit to Wales with his companion, surf photographer OBosko¹ and young aerial champion, Asher Pacey, confirmed Margo's notoriety as a performer in anything from knee high to overhead conditions.

Yet even when there was no surf, Margo found plenty to keep him entertained from visiting castles, tasting the local beers, through to playing some legendary games of golf.

"Surfing in Wales was just the most refreshing surf trip I've been on. We had Isaac Kibblewhite, a local champion, show us some great spots and I¹ve taken in some amazing countryside. There¹s just so much history here. It pumps," he says.

Quiet, reserved, cruisey on land - at sea he is transformed into an unbridled, experimental artist, casting his bold brushstrokes all over the wave's shifting canvas.

"I'm just a lucky bastard that gets to go free surfing all the time" said Margo, whose down to earth and unaffected personality shines through. I feel so inspired that I have surfed in Wales and Ireland and really hope we can come back again next year.²
